Grooming Tips: Ocicat
The Ocicat is a low maintenance cat. If your Ocicat has a short tight coat you can bathe him the day before the show. If the coat is a little on the plush side, bathe the cat 2 or 3 days before the show. Use any good pet shampoo that is sold by vendors at the cat shows. Ring Five, Bio Groom and Charbon are some of the good brands. Charbon is very good for the plush coats, you can either use it as a shampoo or add 1 teaspoon of Charbon to one gallon of rinse water (use as a conditioner). Use a clear shampoo for the dilute spotted Ocicats and Ocicats with the silver colored background. The colored shampoo, such as Burnished Bronze is good for a chocolate spotted Ocicat. Be sure to rinse the cat very well. Towel dry and then let the cat run in a nice warm area. When the cat is completely dry usa a flea comb to pull out the loose hair. Clean the ears with a soft cotton tip swab, being very gentle. Clip the nails with a nail clipper. Your Ocicat is ready for the show. At the show, before judging begins, use the flea comb on the coat and check the ears and eyes to be sure they are clean. Just before going to a ring a chamois cloth is good to smooth down the coat. House of An-Ju makes a texturizer spray that works well in making the coat to lie flat and to feel smooth (you only need a spritz on your hand, rub your hands together, then run your hands over the Ocicat's coat). You want the coat to feel clean and silky and have a nice sheen. You and your Ocicat are ready for the first Judge's ring - have fun. Text: Mona Cherrington 7/99 |
