CFA Legislative ALERT12 March 2003 The Honorable Lou Correa
Dear Chairman Correa; I am writing on behalf of the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) to express our concerns about AB 395 and to ask that our organization be included on the list of those opposed in the Bill Analysis for the Committee. CFA is a non-profit organization founded in 1906. As the largest registry of pedigreed cats in the world our mission is to preserve and promote the pedigreed breeds of cats and to enhance the well-being of ALL cats. CFA is a positive force that helps to educate the general public about proper cat care, spay/neuter and responsible pet ownership. We have taken a lead in educating the general public on declawing and tendonectomy surgical procedures. CFA disapproves of routine declawing and our formal statement is attached. We encourage alternatives to declawing. However, we strongly believe that there are valid reasons for this surgery and that the proposed subsection 4826.5 would be an unprecedented criminalization of a lawful procedure that is safe and when competently performed will not harm domestic cats. CFA opposes legislative attempts to target veterinary elective surgical procedures, which should remain the decision of cat owners based on their veterinarian's professional judgement and advice.
Very truly yours,
