CFA Legislative ALERTLast Updated: March 17 2003 California fanciersPlease send a brief letter opposing AB 395 Cat Declawing (Koretz). We especially want cat clubs and other organizations to get on the OPPOSITION LIST for the Business and Professions Committee well ahead of the upcoming hearing. The total number of individuals in opposition will be listed as well. You should state that while we disapprove of routine declawing and strongly support education and alternatives, we oppose legislation that would make criminals of veterinarians. There are times when this surgical procedure could be a necessary option for someone to keep their cat. CFA believes that veterinary medical procedures should remain a decision made by individual pet owners based on their veterinarian's advice. With proper techniques and pain alleviation available today the surgery is not painful or inhumane for domestic cats and laser surgery is now available. Declawing is not desirable or even necessary - most veterinarians in California only perform this as a last resort - but it should not be outright banned by law and could be life saving for a cat. I met with the Committee Consultant, Chris Gallardo, this week and provided him with the CFA Opposition letter, which is linked as a guide. He has the CFA statement on declawing from our web site along with articles and information in preparation for his written analysis for Committee members. The hearing is Tuesday March 25th - I will testify on behalf of CFA. (UPDATE NOTE: The Business and Professions Committee hearing has now been postponed until Tuesday April 1st.) Send copies of your letter (organizations/cat clubs use letterhead) to all Committee members - contact information is below. Faxed or mailed letters are definitely preferred, but email is acceptable. Remember, this state declaw bill is just one more step toward infringing on pet owners' rights and is tied into the "guardian" campaign. Assembly Member Paul Koretz (West Hollywood) is the bill author.
