    Clerking Program: Ring Management FAQ

How many calls must I give to call cats to the ring?

The CFA Show Rules are very specific on this matter. They state that a cat must be presented the first time it is called to the ring. The three call procedure is strictly a courtesy to exhibitors. Here again, you probably should talk to the judge on their desire in this matter. It is very customary for the club to have an input regarding "calls". Some judges prefer that the clerk give two calls. If the exhibitor is not in the ring, the clerk should determine if the absent cat is owned by another clerk or a member of the show committee. If it is, they should make an effort to find the person and advise them of their call. If the exhibitor is not engaged as indicated, the clerk should estimate when the judge will need the cat, and give a third call approximately one minute before the estimated time for judging.

How important are the entries that I make in the catalog that I give to the judge?

The function of the clerk is to "Certify that the judges color class sheets are accurate when they are turned over to the master clerk". If your entries are not correct, then you have no way of certifying that the judges records are correct. Accuracy is the very essence of the clerking program.

What do I do to insure that I run the ring the way that the judge desires?

It is highly encouraged that the clerk approach the judge at the beginning of the show and ask "Do you have any special requests regarding arrangement of your cats?" it is also very nice to determine how the judge wishes for the clerk to return cats to their benching cages after judging is completed. Some judges wish to turn down the numbers themselves; others leave it up to the clerk. Also some judges want their kittens arranged in alternate male/female order even though the show rules do not require that arrangement. Keep in mind that you are the "Executive Assistant" to the judge. The best way to find out how the judges want things done is to ASK.
