    CFA Clerking Program History

The CFA Clerking Program was officially initiated at the suggestion of CFA Attorney Robert Winn at the January, 1967 meeting of the CFA Executive Board.

Regional Vice-President Will Thompson was appointed as the first chairperson of the CFA Clerking Program and he directed the program until June 1969. In subsequent years, the Clerking Program was headed by Edna Field, Walter and Phyllis Friend, Bill Lee, and Chuck Reich. The current chair of the CFA Clerking Program is Regina Shaffer. Under their leadership, the program thrived and substantial changes were made which included:

    • a provision that all applicants to the CFA Judging Program must hold a Master Clerk's license
    • the recognition of assistant clerks and a license for that position
    • new forms were drawn up to aid clerks
    • Catalog Correction Request Forms were introduced to allow catalog errors to be corrected at a show
    • the status and licensing of Master Clerk Instructors was initiated
    • a new catalog format which made it easier to record transfers was adopted
    • final award sheets were consolidated
    • clerking records were computerized
    • scoring and grading of the clerk examinations by machine was implemented
    • the Clerking Program Manual was revised in 2002

Currently, development of a new data management program for the Clerking Program files is underway. The CFA Clerking Manual is in the process of being revised, and a new Master Clerk Manual and standard Clerking School Lesson Plan are being developed. The CFA Clerking Program Committee is working hard to broaden the communications avenues with clerks throughout CFA.
